The City of San Ramon has achieved a green technology milestone with the opening of the first hydrogen station along Interstate 680 where drivers can fill up and experience a guilt-free drive. The ribbon cutting celebrating the San Ramon hydrogen fueling station located at 4475 Norris Canyon Road was held on October 10, 2017.

carThe San Ramon hydrogen fueling station is just the sixth in the Bay Area. Earlier this year, a San Ramon woman became the first Bay Area resident to purchase a hydrogen-cell fuel car.  The public fueling station will help reduce pollution by using cutting-edge technology for a new generation of vehicles, making auto-related emissions cleaner in and around San Ramon, as well as neighboring towns along the Interstate 680 corridor.

“We are excited to be part of this environmentally friendly and groundbreaking moment,” said San Ramon City Manager Joe Gorton, who drives the Toyota Mirai, a fuel cell electric vehicle. “The fuel cell electric vehicle is often the topic of discussion among community members when they see me driving it.”

The fueling station has been constructed on a half-acre parcel onNorris Canyon Road at Bishop Drive. It was funded in part by a California Energy Commission grant. “The Energy Commission is pleased to support the adoption of zero-emission fuel cell electric cars by expanding California’s network of hydrogen refueling stations,” said California Energy Commissioner Janea A. Scott.  “The City of San Ramon’s new hydrogen station helps fuel cell drivers to travel more freely in the Bay Area and encourages more Californians to consider getting behind the wheel of these cutting-edge and fun-to-drive cars.”

The fueling station property is owned by Toyota Motor Sales USA and the facility will be operated by the Linde Group, an industrial gases company. The market for fuel cell electric vehicles powered with hydrogen is new, with approximately 2,500 cars on the road in California, including ones from Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota.
