For Immediate Release No one from Wal-Mart has contacted the City about plans to lease space and open a store in San Ramon. The City learned of the new store by determining that Wal-Mart is now seeking construction bids for the tenant improvements for a Neighborhood Market in San Ramon. Neighborhood Markets that have been opened in other communities are standard full service neighborhood grocery stores similar to a Safeway, Lucky, or Nob Hill store. This type of store is not the same as a Wal-Mart super store, as Neighborhood Markets are significantly smaller in size and focused on groceries. It appears that Wal-Mart is planning to occupy a long vacant grocery store retail space, and the owner has not proposed any changes to the existing neighborhood commercial center. Country Club Village, a redevelopment project in San Ramon, was designed with extensive public input and the result was the development of a grocery anchored neighborhood serving retail center. The original anchor for the project was a Ralph’s grocery store. Unfortunately the Ralph’s store was closed in 2006, after Ralph’s parent company, Kroger, made a corporate decision to close all of their Ralph’s stores in Northern California. After Ralph’s closed, an independent Asian grocery store opened for a short time, but it closed two years ago. Since then no other grocery store has expressed any interest in this location, and the neighborhood has been without a local grocery store for several years. A Neighborhood Market would need to meet all City requirements and the shopping center’s own rules and regulations. Overnight parking of vehicles is prohibited, and all trash must be cleaned up, as is true for all of the shopping centers in San Ramon. The Dodge Project Center indicates that alteration construction bids are due to Wal-Mart later this month.
