POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under supervision of the Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Supervisor, this position provides leadership and program responsibility to the San Ramon Olympic Pool & Aquatic Park and Dougherty Valley Aquatic Center in all operations at the facility including swim lessons, recreational swim, water safety classes, aquatics summer camps, and staff development.  These positions can be assigned up to a 40 hour work week which may include some evenings and weekends.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Typical job duties include:

Senior Lifeguard:

  • All duties and responsibilities of a Lifeguard I-IV and Swim Instructor;
  • Conducting proper opening and closing procedures of the aquatic facilities;
  • Assisting in All Staff trainings and meetings;
  • Analyzing program needs and recommend new and innovative program ideas;
  • Setting up proper furniture arrangements, equipment, and facility maintenance;
  • Working as a Lead with Lifeguards and Swim Instructors and offering assistance in maintaining the proper execution of all aspects of facility rentals and programs;
  • Ensuring all policies of the City of San Ramon are followed during all programs, special events and facility use;
  • Providing customer service and problem solving;
  • Performing functions of CLASS registration software applications;
  • Preparing daily deposits and reconciling daily reports, ensuring that all revenues received at assigned sites are properly entered and accounted for;
  • Ability to be the Lead staff during facility rentals and Lap Swim; and
  • Assisting the Lead Pool Manager with Recreation Swim, and the Junior Lifeguard and Star Guard camps;

Assistant Pool Manager:

  • All duties and responsibilities listed above as well as those of a Lifeguard I-IV and Swim Instructor;
  • Operating City of San Ramon vehicles;
  • Planning and organizing program elements;
  • Maintaining supply inventory;
  • Acting as the direct contact for program participants to explain policies, procedures, and problem solve;
  • Assisting the Lead Pool Manager with the Swim Lesson program during summer programming; and
  • Acting as the Lead staff for the Swim Lesson program during Spring and Fall.

Pool Manager:

  • All duties and responsibilities listed above as well as those of a Lifeguard I-IV and Swim Instructor;
  • Scheduling staff for facility rentals and City of San Ramon programming;
  • Creating, modifying, and implementing age-appropriate program curriculums;
  • Creating and distributing marketing materials;
  • Assisting in the implementation and scheduling of staff, programs, and services; and
  • Acting as the Lead Pool Manager for the following programs: Swim Lessons, Junior Lifeguard Camp, Star Guard Aquatic camp, and Recreation Swim.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of philosophy, objectives and requirements of supervising a municipal aquatics program;
  • Knowledgeable of latest safety standards and information related to aquatics;
  • Ability to utilize staff and volunteers effectively;
  • Ability to function effectively without direct supervision and develop effective working relationships  with City employees and the public;
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to receive direction and follow oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and use simple math;
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks;
  • Ability to evaluate personnel and programs effectively;
  • Ability to be reliable, dependable, show creativity and enthusiasm.
  • Knowledge of office equipment, practices, and procedures;
  • Ability to interact with the public, including handling citizen complaints in a professional, tactful, patient and courteous manner;
  • Ability to swim, tread water, perform rescues involving the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force to move objects, and to perform retrieval of heavy items from 14’ depth;
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time;
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and with exposure to pool chemicals;
  • Possess vision to read written materials and computer screens, and hearing and speech to communicate in person in addition to other physical parameters established by facility supervisors and;
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including nights, and weekdays and weekends.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Senior Lifeguard

Previous experience as a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor is preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. At least two or more years experience or equivalent working in aquatics is highly desirable, possession of at least one instructor level certification in Lifeguarding, Water Safety, or other related areas. Minimum 17 years of age.

Asstistant Pool Manager

At least three or more years experience or equivalent working in aquatics is highly desirable, leadership work experience, possession of Water Safety Instructor certification and at least one additional instructor level certification in Lifeguarding or other related areas, is highly desirable. Minimum 18 years of age.

Pool Manager

At least three or more years experience or equivalent working in aquatics is highly desirable, leadership work experience, possession of Water Safety Instructor certification and at least one additional instructor level certification in Lifeguarding or other related areas. Minimum 18 years of age.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Work permit is required if under age 18;
  • Appropriate clearances from background check/fingerprinting;
  • Documentation of a negative skin test for TB within the last 2 years; and
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States. 

Senior Lifeguard

Current American Red Cross certifications in Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR/AED for Lifeguards. In addition to the above Lifeguard certification requirements, possession of at least one instructor level certification in Lifeguarding, Water Safety, or other related areas are highly desired.

Asstistant Pool Manager

In addition to the above Lifeguard certification requirements, possession of Water Safety Instructor certification and one additional instructor level certifications in Lifeguarding or other related area.

Pool Manager

In addition to the above Lifeguard certification requirements, possession of Water Safety Instructor certification and at least one additional instructor level certifications in Lifeguarding or other related area.

SELECTION PROCESS

The most-qualified applicants, as determined by an initial screening of applications, will be invited to participate in the application and testing process.  Depending on the position, testing may consist of physical tests, aptitude and skills tests, written and oral portions.  The application and testing process also includes background checks including but not limited to: driving record, Department of Justice Livescan fingerprinting, employment references, negative TB test, and criminal background checks.
