Central Park Sports Field Closure
Posted on 09/28/2018

October 2, 2018
The fields at Central Park will be closed while repairs are being completed over the next several weeks.  The damaged turf will be removed and the City will evaluate each field to determine the best method to restore the field to a useable condition.  Waste Management of Alameda County is paying to repair the turf they damaged. The City will continue to work directly with user groups to re-schedule impacted events.  Once repairs are complete the fields will remain closed as part of our normal seasonal maintenance for the Central Park Sports Fields.  The Sports Fields at Central Park will re-open in early 2019 at their regularly scheduled time after the seasonal maintenance is completed.

September 28, 2018 Update
In order to maintain sports fields in an environmentally friendly manner,  the City of San Ramon periodically spreads organic compost on the playing surfaces. The compost is made from yard trimmings and food scraps and provided by Waste Management of Alameda County.  On September 18, 2018, the City discovered that the most recent load of compost was contaminated with small glass particles.  This compost was used on the sports fields at Central Park between the dates of September 10, 2018 and September 13, 2018, before the glass particles were discovered.  Upon the discovery of the contamination, the City immediately closed all of the sports fields at Central Park to all users and began clean-up of the glass.  The fields remain closed while the City and Waste Management develop an effective remedy (including full re-sodding of the playing surfaces), and the cause of the contamination is being investigated.  Until the issue is fully resolved and the safety of the community is ensured, the sports fields will remain closed.   City staff will continue to update the City of San Ramon website as more information becomes available.  If you have any further questions please contact Assistant City Manager Eric Figueroa at 925.973.2632 or by email at efigueroa@sanramon.ca.gov.
