The Teen Rock Band Showcase featured Fourteen Bands and a Positive Message for Teens

The Rock Band Showcase, hosted by “A Brighter Day” and sponsored by the City of San Ramon and the Town of Danville, was held on January 26th, at the San Ramon Community Center.  Fourteen bands performed three songs each with over 400 teens and adults in attendance cheering the groups on. The San Ramon Teen Council and Danville Youth Advisory groups volunteered as emcees for the event and helped pass out backpacks containing resources on stress and depression to all of the attendees. Additionally, the judges for the night were from the music industry and included Stevie Keys, Joy Saleh and Jack King. The winner of this year’s showcase was Ruakh from Dougherty Valley High School.  As the winner, Ruakh will receive free studio time with 60 friends and their own MP3 & MP4 file of the session.

Many of the teens performing were excited to have an opportunity to perform in front of their friends and family.  One band drove from Brentwood and remarked that they had never seen so many teen bands in one place before.  A parent said “Thank you! This gives my son’s band a place to go on a Saturday night and do something that he enjoys a lot”.

The “A Brighter Day” organization was created in memory of Jake Kallen, Acalanes High School graduate. In 2015, Jake committed suicide because of stress and depression and since then “A Brighter Day” has been on a mission to provide resources to teens so they know who to call and how to get help if they feel overwhelmed and depressed. “A Brighter Day” brings together resources for teens with music that teens listen to along with live teen band performances in a healthy and safe environment.

The Rock Band Showcase began three years ago in Lafayette, California with six bands and 150 attendees. Since then, Rock Band Showcase has grown and has held multiple events throughout the Bay Area sending a message to teens letting them know that there is help available if they or someone they know is dealing with stress and depression.
