Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)

An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is an attached or detached subordinate dwelling unit located on a lot which contains a single-family dwelling.  It shall include provisions for living, eating, sleeping, cooking, and sanitation.  An ADU may include an efficiency unit or manufactured home, but is not considered an accessory building.

Disclaimer:  The San Ramon City Council is currently reviewing revised Zoning Ordinance requirements for ADUs.  The Planning Services Division anticipates the effective date of the revised requirements in late February 2020.   Additional information regarding the proposed revised Zoning Ordinance ADU regulations can be viewed and downloaded under Agenda Item 12.2 on the January 14, 2020 City Council Agenda (http://sanramonca.iqm2.com/Citizens/Detail_Meeting.aspx?ID=2705).

The City of San Ramon allows ADUs subject to specific Zoning Ordinance standards (Zoning Ordinance section D4-39) and review and approval by the City.  For more information, please review the Zoning Ordinance section D4-39, brochure, and submittal requirement list below:
