What does a day in Happy Scholars look like?
We begin the day with peer and adult facilitated free play using educational toys that boost awareness of alphabet and numbers, storytelling, imagination, sharing. Our morning meeting follows free play which to include the animal, shape and color of the day, weather, seasons, and stretching. We then move into small work groups and stations.

Tuesday Groups Include:

1) At their own pace and choice of order, student move about a carefully selected set of instructional activities.

2) Intro to Handwriting Without Tears Program: An innovative, easy to learn, multisensory program designed to prepare children for school in the areas of Reading and Writing, Language and Literacy,

3) Math Focus Group-Using our Math Journal we review the Number of the day, Shape of the Day, Numbers and Math components of Handwriting without Tears Program are also explored further.

Thursday Groups Include:

1) At their own pace and choice of order, student move about a carefully selected set of instructional activities.

2) Zoo-phonics: The Zoo-phonics Multisensory Language Arts Program is a kinesthetic, multi-modal approach to learning all aspects of language arts, including vocabulary development and articulation based on phonics and phonemic awareness.

3) Journaling: Confidence-building activities that emphasize and motivate students to see themselves as independent readers and writers.

Following a short snack break and quiet reading time, the class will break into 2 groups for Arts and Science.  Art projects vary including theme based projects and use a wide variety of arts and crafts materials.

During science, children practice order, observation, solutions, and more while experiencing exciting large group, small group, and individual experiments. Chemistry, Earth Science, Geology, Life Science, Zoology and more are some of the units introduced. 

Our final session of the day incorporates culture and community awareness activities, singing, sharing.

About the Instructor

sbarkerinstructorSharon Barker has had extensive teaching experience with much of her practice occurring here in the San Ramon area. She has designed and taught enrichment and visual arts programs for both Preschool and Youth for the City of San Ramon Parks and Community Services Department for over 14 years.

Sharon received her bachelor’s degree from Cal State East Bay. Teaching in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District for over 5 years has given her a unique perspective about how to prepare and transition preschool-aged children into rigorous academic instruction. She has vast experience designing and implementing curriculum as she was a member of the support team to create the San Ramon Valley Unified School District’s adopted Visual Arts curriculum, 2008-2011.

Happy Scholars is her most thrilling project yet and she is excited to begin!

Explore art as an extension of play while learning new skills: cutting, ripping, stamping, painting, gluing, rubbing, folding and poking. Young kids love art, especially when they dive into the process of creating art and experience the tactile feel of the materials. Fine art essentials are transmitted through sensory, playful and imaginative projects. Art Fun for Parent & Me

Spend quality time with your child while creating keepsakes based on a theme of the week.  We paint, glue, draw and do 4-5 clever art projects each week that are fun and engaging for little hands. We Love to Paint

Young artists will explore a variety of new painting techniques and mediums. Try out foam, watercolor, glossies, tempera, glitter, shiny and fluorescent paints. Participants will use texture, pattern and design to create their own personalized artwork. Then they will use these techniques in oil resists, print making, painted sculptures, and mixed media. $33 materials fee

Combine art and science and more while learning about animals! Get a close-up look at the animal of the week as we explore simple facts about them. We will read and learn about the animals’ habitat and features, rotate through some fun activities such as animal matching, count that animal and animal sorting. Boost your child's reading skills in this educational setting, as we read and discuss popular books such as 'Louella May, She's Runaway!' and 'Mean Soup'. Defining key ideas and details, we craft a 'lap book' to summarize and further our understanding of the story. Our lap books are a guided, fun and engaging account which includes art, writing, simple patterning, identification of story order, and children's own thoughts and opinions about the story. This exciting, innovative and early child based curriculum is designed using common core standards, teaching children how to think not what to think. $25 materials fee.

Get Ready for Preschool

This is a class to help tots transition into an actual preschool setting. Parents stay with their children and help them experience what it's like to be in preschool. We will have a circle time, art time, reading/letters and numbers activities, snack time, play time, cooking and science activities.  Students will practice skills in small group settings and have some one-on-one time with the teacher.  A $59 materials fee includes early readers, worksheets, cooking/science/art materials used in class.  To enforce the concept of sharing, students may be asked to bring a small amount of some food that they help prepare at home, to share with class members during cooking activities.  Please Note:  Parent participation required. Instructor: Tiny Techs Club
A unique program that is aimed at fostering creativity through science and technology in younger children, our KinderBOTS program has a strong focus on introducing simple engineering and technology concepts to tiny tots in a fun, hands-on way. Our custom-designed curriculum encourages children to ask questions about these concepts as they relate to our everyday life. What is a GEAR? What is a PULLEY? Where do we see it? Can I build one? All this and more in our fantastic 6 week class!  Children will be provided with a kit and a computer to work on-small class size ensures plenty of help, guidance and one-on-one attention. All children will be taught how to program their robot using simple drag-and-drop programming.

This class emphasizes early literacy in children to prepare them for a lifelong love of reading.  Theme-based sessions introduce vital language and pre-reading skills through wonderful read-alouds, songs, storyboards, movement and finger play. Science Beginnings: Soda Pop and Food Science Experiments

These are exciting experiment-based classes.  Simple scientific concepts are introduced through easy, fun, and stimulating experiments. We'll explore Magnetism and make a buzz with singing magnets, horseshoe, bar, and wand magnets.  We'll make root beer (and take some home too) as we learn about yeast and carbon dioxide. Discover what side-walk chalk is made up of, and make your own chalk. Examine the movement of molecules in liquids. What increases the movement of molecules in liquids? What slows it down? A $4 supple fee is required on the first day of class.

Tots Who Love to Paint Spring Break Camp

Instructor: SHARON BARKER
Does your child love to paint and create art? In our week long program we have a blast creating and painting projects on paper, cardboard, boxes, and foam! We will use quirky tools like bubble wrap, corks, forks, pasta and tissue to paint with using anything from watercolor paint, glitter paint, shiny, florescent, and foamy paint. Most of our projects will be related to Spring, such as birds that we will draw together and then paint, flowers and trees, and other objects reminiscent of this time of year. There will be no sneak peeks all week until Friday, when we host our very own Art Show, for everyone to come and see!  $25 Materials fee.
