THANKSGIVING COMPOSTING TIPS:

When you're done feeding your belly this Thanksgiving, feed your compost cart!

Thanksgiving Dinner Plate

All the food scraps from Thanksgiving dinner are compostable! Reduce landfill waste by placing food scraps and food-soiled paper in the compost cart rather than the garbage cart.

The compost cart is your green or black cart for food, soiled paper products, plants, yard trimmings, and other “green waste.”

Following are some common Thanksgiving "leftovers" and tips on how to dispose of them.

  • Turkey carcass - Place all unwanted meat, bones, and skin into the compost cart.
  • Gravy - Compost cart.
  • Potato peels – Compost cart.
  • Wine Corks - If the cork is natural, place it in the compost cart. Plastic or synthetic corks must be placed in the garbage cart.
  • Pie - Any leftover pie crumbs and pie from a guest's plate should be placed in the compost cart.
  • Aluminum Pie Tray - Wipe your tray clean with a paper towel. Then, place the paper towel in the compost cart and the aluminum pan into the recycle cart.
  • Cans and Bottles – All cans (including tin/steel cans and empty whipped cream canisters), bottles, jars, jugs, tubs, and other food containers made from plastic (labeled #1 - #7), metal, or glass go in the recycle cart.
  • FOG (Fats, Oil, Grease) -For small amounts, let it cool, then wipe with a paper towel and place in the compost cart.
  • Deep Frying Oil - If you have a pot full of oil or grease, take it to the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District drop-off facility: http://centralsan.org/index.cfm?navId=301.
  • Paper Napkins and Towels - Any food-soiled paper products (paper towels, napkins, cups, plates, cartons) can be placed into the compost cart.

Please don’t place any regular plastic bags into your compost cart. To keep your compost cart clean, you can place food scraps in between layers of leaves or other yard trimmings. You may also put your food scraps inside of a paper bag, a compostable plastic bag, cardboard box, milk carton, ice cream carton, or any other paper container before putting them into your compost cart. Please no plastic, Styrofoam, metal or glass in the compost cart.
