The City of San Ramon has a contract with Waste Management to provide these services.  To lodge a complaint or if you are not satisfied with Waste Management’s services, please contact David Krueger at (925) 973-2824 or Dkrueger@sanramon.ca.gov

Contact WM if you need to:
  • Start service
  • Report a missed pick-up or any other service problem
  • Replace or repair a cart
  • Change your cart size
  • Resolve a billing issue
  • Obtain general program information

Missed pick-ups reported by 3:00 p.m. on a work day will be collected by the end of that day. Missed pick-ups reported after 3:00 p.m. will be collected by the end of the next work day. Requests for cart repair, replacement, or exchange will be completed within 3 working days of notification.

Curbside Rates

Residential customers are billed quarterly by Waste Management. Rates are adjusted on January 1 of each year per a cost index formula specified in the contract between the City and Waste Management. Curbside rates are based upon the size of garbage cart requested. Click here to download rates.

If you can recycle more and "trash" less, you can save money by getting a smaller garbage cart.  Call Waste Management (925) 837-3356 to exchange your cart size. One free garbage cart exchange per year.

Curbside Collection

Single family-homes and those condominiums and townhomes with individual cart service receive weekly curbside collection of garbage, recyclables, yard trimmings and used motor oil. All materials are collected on the same day of the week. Collection hours are 5:30 a.m. through 7:00 p.m. Residents should place all materials at the curb before 5:30 a.m. on their regular service day.

The carts should be placed squarely facing the street without blocking the sidewalk, and allow 2-3 feet of clearance on all sides so that the automated truck arms can pick them up.

Residents with disabilities may request side yard collection service at no additional charge.

Extra Garbage

Garbage must fit inside of your garbage cart so that the lid closes.

If you have more garbage than will fit in your garbage cart, you can purchase Extra Trash Service tags to place on a 32 gallon bag (provided by resident) for collection of occasional extra garbage. Put your full 32 gallon bag (provided by resident) with tag facing the street, on the curb, next to your garbage cart, on your regular collection day. Tags can be purchased and mailed to your home by calling Waste Management at (925) 837-3356. You can also purchase Extra Trash Service tags at San Ramon City Hall (7000 Bollinger Canyon Rd), or at the Permit Center (2401 Crow Canyon Rd), M-F, 8:30 am – 4:00 pm. The price of the tag ($7 each, 1 per 32 gallon bag) includes the cost of the extra pickup. Extra garbage that is set out beside your garbage cart without the tag will not be picked up.

Another option for occasional extra garbage is to call Waste Management at (925) 837-3356 to order an extra pick up for an additional fee and use your own sturdy trash bag at the curb on collection day.

If you do not either use a BAG IT bag or call to order an extra pick-up, your extra garbage will not be collected. If you have more garbage than will fit in your garbage cart on a regular basis, please contact waste management to obtain a larger garbage cart.

You may also set out extra garbage, at no additional charge, on Special Clean-Up Days. Each residential neighborhood receives three Special Clean-up Days per year. For large, one-time clean-ups, you may also order a garbage dumpster from Waste Management at (925) 837-3356.

Large / Bulky Items

You may call Waste Management at (925) 837-3356 to schedule a special on-call collection of items that are too large or bulky to be collected in your garbage cart: appliances, furniture, mattresses, electronics, tires, fixtures, etc. There is an itemized fee for this service.

PG&E also has an appliance recycling rebate program, and partners with JACO Environmental to collect the appliances from residents. Contact JACO Environmental at (800) 299-7573.

Self Haul

You may also choose to self-haul extra garbage or large / bulky items to a landfill or transfer station. Nearby facilities include the Pleasanton Transfer Station, Contra Costa Transfer Station in Martinez, and the Vasco Rd. Landfill outside of Livermore. Be sure and ask the facility about recycling options.

Waste Management Holiday Schedule

Garbage and recycling collection in San Ramon through Waste Management does not occur on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. If your service falls on or after these holidays, your pickup will occur one day later through Saturday of that week.

Restricted Items

Protect the environment and the health of Waste Management employees. Please do not place the following items into your garbage cart: hot coals, hypodermic needles, fluorescent lights, batteries, wet paint, pool chemicals, cleaning/garden products, tires, T.V.'s, computer monitors, pressurized canisters (propane, butane, helium), or any type of hazardous waste. Please do not overweight your cart with excessive soil, sod, rock, or concrete.
