Juvenile Diversion Program

Juvenile crime is a concern to the citizens of San Ramon, the City Council, the Police Department, and to City Staff. In an effort to address these community concerns, we have enacted a variety of programs to address the issues from all aspects, not simply law enforcement.

The San Ramon Police Department utilizes a Juvenile Diversion Program, allowing first-time offenders to make mistakes without suffering from a criminal record. We have found that this program is the best opportunity for family and the Police Department to work together to solve a problem before it becomes serious.

Secondly, the Youth Resource Officer Program is designed to assist those families by addressing the child as an individual and the family as a whole. This single program, and the efforts of the officer assigned to this program, have single-handedly lowered the rate and occurrence of juvenile crime within the City.

Finally, we have enacted an assortment of enforcement programs – from a juvenile drinking suppression program (that serves as a model program within the County), to bicycle helmet enforcement patrols. We are committed to providing the best opportunity for the youth of our community to succeed, and have been provided the tools by the City Council to accomplish this task. However, no amount of policing or counseling can replace parental involvement in the lives of our children.
