The Teen Council Poetry Contest is a creative outlet for students to express their voice in an upbeat and positive manner about their community. Their new, developing viewpoints will be able to illustrate life in the community as it is understood among San Ramon youth.

Categories and Rules:
Students should write their poem to answer the prompt. Poems should not exceed 2 pages, 8.5’’ x 11’’. They should be persuasive, informative, and artistic. Entries must be turned in through an application available at the bottom of this page.

What does Memorial Day mean to you?
Memorial Day is a holiday that honors military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. However, it could elicit a myriad of responses from our diverse community that aren’t necessarily related to the United States Military. What does this day mean to you in particular?

Winners will get the opportunity to present their poems at the Arts & Wind Festival and poetry
will be posted on the City of San Ramon’s Teen Website,

Student Eligibility and Judging:
Participants must be from 6th to 12th grade and attending an SRVUSD school or residing in San
Ramon in order to take part in the competition. Participants can submit up to two pieces. The
Arts Advisory Committee and San Ramon Poet Laureate will comprise the panel to judge the


Poems can be submitted online at from February 20 until April 10, 2020 at 5 pm. Results will be announced on April 22, 2020. 

Use of Copyrighted Material:
Participants must make sure that all pieces submitted to the Teen Council Poetry Contest are
entirely their own. The use of copyrighted material is not acceptable in any submission. Public
places, well-known products, trademarks, or certain other copyrighted material must be included
if they do not try to establish an association between the applicant and the trademarked material
or promote the purchase/non-purchase of a trademarked good.
