El Niño Preparedness Information

El Niño Prep 2026

California Governor Gavin Newsom recently issued a State of Emergency Proclamation ahead of an anticipated significant 2026–27 El Niño season. El Niño is a climate pattern that may bring periods of heavy rain, flooding, strong winds, and power outages during the fall and winter. The National Weather Service (NWS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are monitoring conditions for the upcoming event.

The City of San Ramon, Town of Danville, and San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District (SRVFPD) are continuing planning and preparation efforts, including clearing downed trees and debris from creeks and channels, inspecting and cleaning storm drains, and preparing and supplying sandbag distribution sites throughout the community.

How can you prepare?

Stay Informed:

There are various notification systems to keep you informed before and during an emergency, including:

  • Community Warning System: Contra Costa County's official emergency alert system that can send voice, text and email alerts
  • Nixle: locally operated by San Ramon Police Department and SRVFPD to send out specific alerts to a ZIP code.
  • Genasys Protect: mobile app and web-based platform that delivers real-time emergency and evacuation information
  • PulsePoint: mobile app that allows residents to stay informed on real-time incidents

Prepare Your Property:

  • Clear gutters, downspouts, drains, and culverts
  • Check roofs and areas where water may enter
  • Make sure water drains away from structures
  • Secure any outdoor items that may be affected by strong winds

Have a Plan:

  • Prepare an emergency plan, gather supplies, plan for medications and other essential needs
  • Make sure everyone in your household knows what to do during an emergency
